A Recycled Shesk 09/02/2012

Is it a delf or a shesk? This is the newest addition to my writing corner.

I normally write on an ironing board in a corner of the bedroom, because there’s simply no room for a big desk. I have to fold the ironing board away at night so Mr Z doesn’t trip over it in the dark. Less pain for Mr Z (good), but a pain in the neck for me, because all my writing projects get stacked together at the end of the day and I have to sort it all out in the morning. If only I could leave some of my stuff out, so I could find what I want easily...

My son’s crummy old desk has been stored in our lean-to for some time. It was too long to fit in my writing space, and too full of graffiti to sell or give away, but I reckoned if we cut it down, it’d fit nicely into the corner. After much sanding down, I applied my home-made chemical-free polish to the desk-top and the job was done.

It’s not very deep, and I usually sort my projects into three piles on there, so I use it more like a shelf. Hence, ‘shesk’ or ‘delf’. I still write on the ironing board, but my new addition means I can leave stuff in tidy piles.

So, one desklet/shesk/delf for hardly any cost, and nothing taken to the tip. (And we still have the drawer section of the old desk in our lean-to, to store odds ‘n’ ends).

It passed its first test yesterday, when someone from a magazine rang. I was able to snatch up the relevant stuff from the right pile and zoom downstairs to take the call. No rummaging, no stress. Magic!

Brilliant Bec, a creative solution to lack of space, eco-worthy and it looks smart. Shame about those rough fingertips, but the result looks well worth it. I've been sanding hardboard, from an old door, to use to paint on. Us recycling creatives must stick together! Good luck with the shesk, great ideas shall definitely result. xxx

Excellent, I'm all for recycling and being green. And every woman needs a shesk of their own.

You'll approve of my recycled 'in-tray' in the pic, then! It's made from a cardboard box. I also made my own pen holder from a kitchen roll inner tube, but that wasn't pretty enough to go in the photo. I need to add finishing touches to that.

Thanks for stopping by, Karl. :)

I do approve! I spend a large amount of time campaigning for environmental, animal and social causes, so sustainability and self-crafted items are the way to go. Your blog is one of the RSS feeds I follow so I always see new posts - it's the only way I can keep on top of everything, using Netvibes to organise home and work life!

Thanks for following my blog! I've never used RSS feeds to follow anyone's blog, as I usually follow with Networkedblogs, but I've now clicked on your blog's RSS feed. It seems like an easier way to keep up with blogs.

The nice thing about Netvibes (and Pageflakes, and other dashboards like that) is that in one place I have RSS feeds plus widgets for things like the weather, email, all my bookmarks, Twitter and Facebook, and other things, organised into tabs (including one for my paid employment). It means I can access all these things from any PC, and I only ever have one link I go to when I open a browser. Not the ideal system for everyone, though!
